After several long years of failed crops and thin hunting for the border tribes, a young Valen was conscripted to offset a portion of the Imperial tribute due from the Reudigni. Frustrated by the long idling, excessive marching, and brutal discipline of military life in the Empire, eventually he petitioned for a transfer to Legio XIII. His needs are simple, and his elevated stipend is largely dedicated to ensuring that his only kinsmen in the legions are voluntary recruits.
Valen is a Legio XIII gladiator.
